The most amazing thing, to me, is that the knowledge behind the device could have been lost for 1000 years. Another fascinating example of a mechanical calculator is the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curta_calculator" rel="nofollow">Curta</a>. It also has an interesting (and fairly tragic) story behind it. I had read about that before.
