Devon photos II

Thatched house

This house, just across the back alley from the place where we were staying, looks exactly like the white rabbit’s house from Alice in Wonderland doesn’t it? We’ll smoke the monster out!

Wadham house

Braced against the wall, this photo shows John contemplating an interesting archway in the former home of Dorothy and Nicholas Wadham.

Dorothy Wadham’s bedroom

The former bedroom of Dorothy Wadham, though the bed is a recent reconstruction.

John Jenkins reading

While I was concentrating on getting my thesis written, most other members of the trip were more concerned with reading. While much was academic, Harry Potter and crime-fighting monks were not wholly excluded.

Milan Ilnyckyj’s thesis workspace

In my hermitage, I worked to compile notes and thoughts into a thesis draft.

Author: Milan

In the spring of 2005, I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in International Relations and a general focus in the area of environmental politics. In the fall of 2005, I began reading for an M.Phil in IR at Wadham College, Oxford. Outside school, I am very interested in photography, writing, and the outdoors. I am writing this blog to keep in touch with friends and family around the world, provide a more personal view of graduate student life in Oxford, and pass on some lessons I've learned here.

  1. Oh, ho ho
Oh, we’ll smoke the blighter out
We’ll put the beast to rout
Some kindling, just a stick or two
Ah, this bit of rubbish ought to do

    We’ll smoke the blighter out!
    We’ll smoke the monster out!

    We’ll roast the blighter’s toes
    We’ll toast the bounder’s nose
    Just fetch that gate
    We’ll make it clear
    That monsters aren’t welcome here!

    Without a single doubt
    We’ll smoke the monster out!
    We’ll smoke the monster out!

  2. Dodo is probably my favourite character from that film: especially when he is standing on the big stone by the sea with his fire, while the other creatures run in circles around him, getting drenched by regular waves.
