Self employment

Is there anything you think you could support a reasonable lifestyle by doing, as a small business?

I think I might be able to support myself through photography, but it’s an increasingly rotten line of work.

In the spring of 2005, I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in International Relations and a general focus in the area of environmental politics. Between 2005 and 2007 I completed an M.Phil in IR at Wadham College, Oxford. I worked for five years for the Canadian federal government, including completing the Accelerated Economist Training Program, and then completed a PhD in Political Science at the University of Toronto in 2023.

  1. A couple of ideas:

-Run a small CSA operation, connecting farmers with people who want to buy their products. Focus on one neighbourhood, and deliver the produce by bicycle (get one of these: http://www.xtracycle.com/)

-Grow red wriggler worms (eisenia foetida) and sell them to people who wish to make worm compost. Sell worm boxes and teach courses as well. A staggering number of these worms can be grown in a very small space, and they can very effectively process organic waste indoors, ideal for urban dwellers. This species of worm can be shipped through the mail, as well

  2. I am a lawyer, which in addition to being a profession is also a small business. For most lawyers, it does support a reasonable life style and has done so for my family and me.
