WestFest

Residents of Ottawa should strongly consider attending WestFest this year. It is a free five day festival happening in Westboro Village between June 11th and 15th. An entire street will be closed off to make room for stages, vendors, and the like. It only takes five minutes to walk there from the Westboro Transitway station.

Performers this year include:

  • 1755 (Acadian group on Thursday)
  • Joel Plaskett (Friday)
  • Buffy Sainte-Marie (Saturday)
  • Holly McNarland (Saturday)
  • Lynn Miles & Sue Foley (Sunday)
  • Andrea Simms Karp (Sunday)

There will also be authors, theatre performers, and artists about.

Emily and I are both volunteering, so you may see us there.

I am writing this blog to keep in touch with friends and family around the world, provide a more personal view of graduate student life in Oxford, and pass on some lessons I've learned here.

  1. On the same topic, Bluesfest this year has an outstanding and diverse lineup (Snoop Dogg!). Matt Good and band, Feist, the Hip, and many others including a nebula of indie bands (Metric, Stars etc)
Saw Matt Good with a full band this past weekend and it was outstanding.

  2. 1755 will be a treat for the GF and the Sis-in-Law as they are both proud Acadiennes… Just don’t call it “seventeen fifty-five like I did! ;-) As I was vocally admonished on more than one occasion, it’s Dix-sept cinquante-cinq…

Maybe its the lack of star power compared to last year but the Bluesfest lineup looks disappointing to me this year (or the rumours that never came true for who they tried to get…) Mind you Its always been about the side stages anyway, you can find some awesome bands on the side stages… Widespread Panic should be quite the show if you like jambands… Being from Kingston originally of course I will be at the Hip… which is Canadian beer rock at its best (though their live performances for the latest album are much better than any in the last 10 years)

Looking like I will get the first weekend pass… (we are away the 2nd weekend or Id just get the festival pass)

And Snopp. I just saw he was added… That should be a fun time.. Same night as WSP and Primus…
