A few minutes ago, something happened above me that was exceptionally loud. I was wearing my Etymotic ER6i headphones with the foam eartips, which boast a 35 decibel reduction in ambient sound. In spite of them, the noise was painfully loud for several seconds.
I assume it was a supersonic patrol of figher aircraft, maintaining some defence of London, nearby, and other potential targets. Definitely unnerving.

It seems quite unlikely they would be using afterburners over urban areas unless there was an immediate emergency. It may have just been low-flying planes, or even redirected air traffic.
Lets not forget that the Typhoon does have a supercruise ability and is in operational service with 3 Squadron and reserve service with 17 and 29 Squadrons. High speed excercises with this type are not out of the question and would not require use of afterburners.

Sir,
Your expertise in such matters is considerable. I recall, in particular, regarding diesel submarines.
