Terrifying news: the Ontario government wants to make it easy for landlords to evict tenants at will.
It’s stuff like this that makes the future terrible to contemplate. The system is already horrendously abused by landlords. Housing stress has been one of the worst parts of my life ever since I moved here. Policy choices like these understandably make people afraid about whether they will be able to have a future at all.

The rationale for Ontario’s Bill 60 does not hold up

Yesterday, the Ontario government introduced Bill 60, Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, 2025, which contains many disconcerting, proposed changes to the Residential Tenancy Act.
The one that jumps out of the page is the government’s stated interest in “Alternative options on lease agreement expiry that could allow landlords to control who occupies their units and for how long.” For anyone who follows housing debates, that’s clearly code for the introduction of fixed-term leases.

Two brothers in Toronto narrowly avoided eviction late last year over a one-cent shortfall, and tenant advocates say it reveals just how dicey renting has become in Ontario, and how proposed legislation could make it even worse.
According to the York South-Weston Tenant Union, Toronto brothers Olliver and Carl received an eviction order last year without a hearing or warning. Based on documents supplied by the union, their landlord filed for eviction after the brothers paid $1,860 instead of the required $1860.01, just a one-cent difference.
Thankfully, with the help of the union, the brothers were able to “set aside” the order, which allows tenants to contest an eviction after it has been issued. However, the union warns that under the proposed legislation introduced by the Ford government, that option could disappear altogether.

The Ontario government has passed a controversial omnibus bill that critics say will make it easier for landlords to evict tenants from their homes.
Bill 60, also known as the “Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act,” passed third reading 71-43 at Queen’s Park Monday following a fast-tracked process with limited debate.
The voting took place amid loud chanting of “people over profit” and “shame” from the public gallery. Following the vote, the speaker ordered the gallery to be cleared as those being ushered away yelled “you’re putting people on the streets.”
