Victoria University divesting from fossil fuels

After an 18 day occupation of the Old Vic building, and after choosing to move their Board of Regents meeting online rather than encounter the students, Victoria University has announced that it will divest from fossil fuels by 2030.

The campaign has a statement out.

  1. That is such a good bit of news. Change happens one person or place at a time.

  2. I am intrigued by why the regents felt the need to hide, given that they were committing to divestment. On one hand, it suggests how fragile and out of touch university administrators are. They know so little about their own campuses that they can’t even assess which groups of students are perfectly safe to meet. On the other, it does suggest that student activists may have gained influence through confrontational tactics. If the regents are worried enough to move their meeting, it suggests that they think the activists do have some power.
